Plenary Indulgences

In honor of the 200th Anniversary of the Archdiocese of St. Louis, the Holy See, through the Apostolic Penitentiary, granted a plenary indulgence available to the faithful through July 26, 2026.

A plenary indulgence, a gift of God’s mercy, helps free the heart from the burden of sin by remitting the temporal punishment for sins already forgiven through the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

The indulgence may also be applied for the souls of the faithful departed, extending this Jubilee gift beyond ourselves.

Archbishop Rozanski warmly invites the faithful to embrace the spiritual richness of our Bicentennial year through pilgrimage and prayer. To mark this extraordinary milestone, he encourages setting aside time to visit the many historic churches and sacred spaces that embody the unique heritage of our local Church. By drawing from the Church’s spiritual treasures—especially Reconciliation, Eucharistic Adoration, and the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass—may this Jubilee be a time of deep renewal and grace.

Conditions for Receiving the Indulgence

To gain the indulgence, the faithful must:

  • Be in a state of grace and truly penitent.
  • Visit, in the form of a pilgrimage, a designated place of worship, and spend a suitable period of time there in prayerful reflection and pious meditation, concluding with the Our Father, the Creed, and invocations to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
  • With a heart detached from sin, fulfill the usual conditions within 20 days before or after the pilgrimage: receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation, receive Holy Communion, and pray for the intentions of the Holy Father.

Special Provision for the Sick and Homebound

The elderly, the sick and those who, for a serious reason, cannot leave home will likewise be able to obtain the plenary indulgence. To gain the indulgence, they must:

  • Be in a state of grace and truly penitent.
  • Detach themselves from any sin and intend to fulfill the three usual conditions (Confession, Eucharistic Communion, and prayer for the intentions of the Holy Father) as soon as possible.
  • Join themselves spiritually to the Jubilee celebration, offer to the Merciful God their prayers and sufferings of their lives concluding with the Our Father, the Creed, and invocations to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
